Directing

I love directing. I love the collaboration and camaraderie. It’s so rewarding to take a script and help bring it to life. Above is a quick sample of some of the projects I’ve directed, and below you can see a few more.

We Love You, Sally Carmichael!

I jumped at the chance to direct my first feature film and reunite with my friend, and writer, Daryn Tufts (My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend"). “Sally” is a sweet, family-friendly romantic comedy that celebrates fandom.

We shot the entire film in 13 days and they were some of the best days of my career. If you’re looking for a film the whole family can enjoy, just click on the title above!

Covert Affairs

“Man in the Middle”

This scene is from the first episode I directed for Covert Affairs. This scene shot on my first day as an episodic director and required a massive build by our crew over the weekend. All of the hanging catwalks in the scene were added by us and, for safety, only six people total were allowed on the set at any time, camera crew included.

“River Euphrates”

My second episode helming Covert Affairs allowed me to visually call back to the pilot when Annie and Auggie are on opposite sides of the door. Directing myself in a scene is always challenging, but particularly so when using focus racks so specifically, like I did here.

"Starlings of the Slipstream”

My third episode as director and maybe my most challenging. The tension in the series was thick at this point in the season so it was nice to be able to open the episode with this brief moment of calm. In my notes I wrote that it should feel like an overdue exhale. I added the coffee details, feeling Annie would be used to making coffee just for herself. Piper added the pour from her cup to McQuaid’s, which I love.

Sights Unseen: A Covert Affairs Prequel

Before directing the main show, I was given the season 4 webisodes as an opportunity to prove myself as a director. We filmed 5 episodes, in a ‘choose your own adventure’ format (sadly, I only have the narrative version to show you), in 5 days, three of which were in Barcelona. Without all the bells and whistles of the main show, DP Colin Hoult and I had to make it look like the Covert Affairs the fans expected. I had particular fun adding in little moments to show how Auggie was still learning how to navigate the world with out sight, approximately five years before he meets Annie Walker.

Funny or Die

Rant Writer

After the success of Pet Hunt, I reunited with Ty Burrell to direct this Chris Kula written short, imagining a world where famous sports rants were actually scripted by a man named Charlie Hoard.

Rant Writer 2

A few years after the success of the first Rant Writer, I pitched a return to the world of Charlie Hoard. Chris Kula and Ty both signed on and the rest is, well, history’s a big word but…

Pet Hunt

This is the very first thing I directed. I wrote the script and am grateful to Mike Farah, at Funny or Die, for giving me a shot. We filmed it in one day and I still owe favors to my friends for helping me out, including Henry Winkler, Lee Majors, Cameron Richardson, Adam Campbell and Larry Andries.

Commercials

Comcast: Xfinity

During season five of Covert Affairs, Comcast hired me to direct this Xfinity Internet/Covert Affairs commercial to run on USA Network. They used our crew so we were able to get it done in about an hour and a half.
